Woodland Management and Maintenance

Edwards Woodland Services began as a woodland contractor and still undertakes a variety of projects within this sector ranging from planting hardwoods to felling and extraction, and thinning to waste (where trees are felled, brashed out and left in a tidy state).

Please see below examples of recent works.

Hardwood Planting, Sygun Fawr, Beddgelert
Client: Private

Following the clearance of Rhododendron on a previous project we successfully won this tender to supply and plant 10,000 native hardwoods in tubes/shelters.

Hazards and challenges included:

Extremely cold weather conditions leading to frozen ground soil and limiting work to warmer, frost-free days only. The poor ground conditions made planting and staking difficult.

Despite the cold temperatures the project was completed on time and, as part of the contract, we are undertaking a maintenance programme of chemical weeding and replacement of any failed trees.

Thinning to Waste, Cwm Mynach, Bont Ddu
Client: The Woodland Trust

After successfully winning the tender we undertook large sale thinning to waste within an area of 36 hectares as part of a long term management plan for the woodland. Trees were felled, brashed out and cut into shorter lengths as per specification. Small areas were opened up for the natural regeneration of native hardwoods and to allow other species such as Bilberry to progress.

Hazards and challenges included:

Ensuring minimal damage to retained trees, especially the broadleaves; ensuring maintenance of public access through the site and unobstructed routes for watercourses present; rough ground conditions and remoteness of the site necessitated the use of 4x4 vehicles only.

The project was successfully completed to schedule.

Client: Pyor-Rickett Silviculture

Pryor-Ricket Silviculture requested that we clear several young plantations as part of their ongoing programme within the Bodnant Estate.

We worked through each plantation, removing damaged, dead or dying trees and pruning the retained ones. This process will continue over many years to ensure the final crop of trees is of a good quality, suitable for timber production if required.
